David was born in Kettering and was a product of the youth system at Rushden & Diamonds. He signed professional forms in July 2000, and made his debut in the Nationwide Trophy tie at Kingstonian in December 2000, coming on as a second half substitute. The following season, he made his League debut at Home Park, Plymouth. After turning 18, he won a regular  place in the team, making 123 Football League appearances. He played for the Republic of Ireland at Under 19 and Under 21 level and had trials at Middlesbrough.

David joined Luton Town on 12.January 2006 on a 3½ year contract after agreement was reached over a £100,000 transfer fee and won the clubs "Player of the year" title in the 2006/07 season. He went on  loan to Leicester City on 27 March 2008 with the prospect of joined them on a permanent basis during the summer.
