Match Reaction: Woking with Kevin Hales
Well Kevin - that performance must have delighted you, coming back from an early goal behind.
Yeah, I think it was an all round good performance from everybody, it wasn't a great spectacle, but at the end of the day after going down after 2 or 3 minutes we had to show a bit of resilience, having Jon Challinor on the scoresheet again is great and Michael Rankine scored a great goal, so I'm very pleased with the three points.
The Team selection as well today, what was the reasoning behind that?
I think we've got a lot of games coming up now, its about 14 or 15 games in the next two months now, some players have got little knocks and some little strains, small things like that, we're trying to preserve as many players as possible so that we can get them through the next two months we've got, and obviously the 14 games we've got. Also it gives the gaffer the opportunity to have a look at players that we've brought in recently, like Michael Corcoran and Conal Platt who was on the bench, we need to have a look at these players to see where we're going to go for next season.
Lets just talk about the goals, you mentioned Jon Challinor as well, he took his effort sweetly didn't he, a left foot drive from just outside the area.
Yeah, it was a little bit of mix and match in there, we had it bobbling around and we won the second ball, it came down and the sign of a good striker is when its there and you can just stick it in the back of the net out of nothing. We've probably been missing a little bit of that this season and Jon Challinor is capable of getting 10 or 15 goals a season like that.
For the second goal Curtis Woodhouse linked up well with dean Howell down the left flank.
Yes, Deano hasn't got down there as much as we would like over the last couple of games, but Woody stuck him down there, it was a great cross and a great run from Rankine and he's headed it in the bottom corner, it was a terrific goal for us.
He made sure that was his goal didn't he, you could see that he wanted it.
Ranks ALWAYS makes it his goal, he should have got more than he has at the moment. He had a chance in the first half which was unfortunate, but he stuck that one away really well, and got the good three points that we needed.
That's his tenth of the season there.
The tenth of the season for Michael Rankine, good, I'm really pleased with that. Hopefully he can keep going and get confidence from that and hopefully by gaining a bit of experience and a bit of confidence we can get 15 or 20 this season.
Charles Ademeno coming on at the end, he looked pretty sharp.
Yeah we thought they were tiring a little bit and we needed some freshness up there, Ranks has given his lot and so we put a bit of pace on. He mowed everyone down in the goalmouth there and was unfortunate not to put the ball in the back of the net, and then he went down like Mike Tyson with a blow to the head, but he's come on and showed us what he's got for a few minutes.
He was laid out for a while, and there was quite a bit of concern, what's the latest? Was it the shock of hitting the ball or what?
He's took the full brunt of it on his head or temples, its always not nice to see a player go down, the rules in my head are that if someone gets a head injury you can stop the game and my concern is about the player, not about the game or whether they're scoring or what, its about the player, so I was just a bit disappointed with that (that the referee waited for Woking to put the ball out rather than stopping the game) but he's alright, he's up and well and he's just got a bit of a headache so he'll be ready to go.
Any more injuries this afternoon
No we're all okay, there's a few little knocks and bruises, you know, but no more than any other player at this time of year. We'll get them all ready on Monday and go to Farsley on Tuesday.
Seven league games unbeaten at home now, that's a decent run.
Seven games unbeaten at home, that's not bad, we've just needed to turn some of the draws into wins, that's probably where it is letting us down at the moment, but there's 14 games to go, lots of points to be got, and hopefully we can get as many as we can.
Farsley Celtic coming up on Tuesday night, what sort of game are you expecting there.
Well they are going to be fighting for their lives, obviously they are down in the mire, I don't know how they got on but they will be looking to get away from the bottom four. No-one wants to get relegated out of this league because its such a big league to be in now, it's a bit like the Premiership of Non-League! No-one wants to dip out of it so it will be a tough game. We played them earlier in the season and they gave us a tough game, we won 1-0, we could have got a couple more if we had taken our chances but ended up one nil winners. They have probably improved during the season, they know what the Conference is about so it'll be a tough game.
Like you say you want to take the maximum points available for the rest of the season.
That's for sure, we want to get as many points as possible and get ourselves up the League. We don't want to be down in the bottom half of the league, we want to be up in the top, if we can get on a run and keep that run going, like you said 7 games undefeated at home, that's good. If we keep that going until the end of the season who knows what could happen, anything.
Have you started now rebuilding for next season, have you got one eye on the squad that you've got for next season.
I think so, we've got 14 games to go, just like when we came here at the end of last season, there was a chance to assess the squad, once again we've got to assess the squad and see where we are going to go next season. Players are out there playing for their contracts, and we want to see if the players want to be here at Rushden and whether they're the type of people that we want to take us forward next year.
