Rushden & Diamonds selected for London 2012 Olympics Pre-Games Training Camp Guide
Rushden & Diamonds have today received confirmation that the club's bid to be included in the London 2012 Olympics Training Camp Guide has been successful, and the Rushden & Diamonds Sports Complex at Nene Park will be included in the guide for National Olympic Committees for the Olympic sports of Archery, Fencing, Football, Judo, Table Tennis and Wrestling.
The Rushden & Diamonds Sports Complex includes the Football Stadium, Training Pitches 2 and 3, and the Diamonds Sports Centre, making it a flexible venue for a range of sporting events, both indoors and out, with facilities such as changing rooms, physiotherapy rooms, teaching facilities, dining and hospitality areas which would provide essential services to any prospective Olympic team.
Nene Park is also in the running to be included in the London 2012 Paralympics Training Camp Guide, subject to meeting extra requirements, which will be announced in the next two months.
The guide allows National Olympic and National Paralympic Organising Committees to search for locations to base their training camps on a sporting and geographical basis, and will be presented to the organising committees at a series of events during the Beijing Olympic and Paralympic events this year.
Chief Executive at Rushden & Diamonds, Helen Thompson said on hearing the news
"We were surprised that we had not been nominated by Northamptonshire County Council or by East Northamptonshire Council as a suitable facility in the first instance so we decided to bat our own wicket and lobby the national Olympic organising office who were most helpful.
I see this as a superb endorsement of the vision and legacy that Max and Stephen Griggs have given to the local community and to Keith Cousins and Rushden & Diamonds Supporters Trust whose investment both in terms of finance and voluntary help have ensured that this fantastic five star facility is here for people to enjoy.
We are also very confident that we shall be featured in the Paralympics Training Camp Guide."
We are very very excited and look forward to the challenges which this will bring us."
