On Sunday 16th March around 300 people ran and walked the Sport Relief Mile, 3 Mile and 6 Mile courses around Nene Park and Stanwick Lakes.

Runners and walkers of all ages and abilities were in attendance, with some choosing to run in as fast a time as possible, whilst others chose a more leisurely pace.

1503am Radio Diamonds were broadcasting and recording at the event, and the Diamond Minors were doing face painting before the run to offer plenty of fun for those runners and walkers before they started. The Diamonds Sports Centre offered a 'come and try it day' for those who preferred staying in the warmth, which proved very popular.

Dazzler and Councillor Eloise Finch, Chairman of East Northants District Council were in attendance to kick off the event, as the runners set off first, closely followed by the walkers.

Rushden & Diamonds Chief Executive, Helen Thompson said "Thank you to all the volunteers, who gave up their Sunday afternoon to help the day go so smoothly, helping out beforehand and also directing runners and walkers around the course. We were delighted with how many people came and visited both the Nene Park complex and the Diamonds Sports Centre. Despite the weather everyone seemed to have a great time"

Matthew Banyard, Ticket, Retail and Press Manager at Rushden & Diamonds said "It was a great day out for all concerned, I ran the 6 mile course in a time of around 47 minutes, which was pretty good considering I had done barely any training! More importantly I've managed to raise over £100 in sponsorship money for a very worthy cause, hopefully everyone running and walking enjoyed themselves despite the wet and windy weather"

The Nene Park & Stanwick Lakes Sainsbury's Sport Relief Mile was one of many mile events taking place around the country as part of the Sport Relief Weekend, raising money to help vulnerable people living incredibly tough lives both at home in the UK and in the world's poorest countries.
