The Diamond League
Places are now becoming available in the Diamond League, Rushden & Diamonds own five-a-side league for local teams.
The Diamond League is in fact two league tournaments: one indoors in the Diamonds Sports Centre and the other on the floodlit Astroturf pitch, along with a cup competition.
The tournament has been running outdoors for about five years and indoors for around seven. Like many football tournaments, they have had their ups and down although for the past couple of years have been very popular. The Diamonds League needs groups of players with a manager who can ensure he can raise a team each week and liase with Ken Dobbs, the organiser. Ken has been at the helm for the last 18 months when the League was about to fold because the previous organiser left.
The tournaments are geared up for eight teams on a Tuesday evening (except matchdays). Indoors, two 13-minute games are played each, whilst at the same time; the outdoor teams have one 25-minute game. All teams have varying kick-off times and are controlled by experienced qualified referees.
The Diamond League is affiliated to the Northants FA and has the usual expectations of conduct. Teams can join the league by making a one-off enrolment fee of £25 and then £20 match fees for each night. Trophies are given to winners as well as individual mementoes for the players in the winning teams.
At the moment, the league is two outdoor teams short of its full complement and expects to have some availability indoors in September when many teams lose players to go off to University. It is a good time for anyone interested to speak to Ken about joining. He can be contacted on 01933 316200 or 07921 368756 or by leaving a message at the Diamonds Sports Centre. The next tournaments start in early April.
Just beyond the halfway point of the season, the indoor tournament leaders have started going through a difficult spell. Real Sports Allstars are the defending champions and started the season strongly, however a string of defeats and draws sees their lead cut to eight points. Goaters look dangerous in second place whilst the erratic form of Lilacs sees them bottom. Outdoors, Voodoo has extended their lead at the top by beating second place The Source. Misco are at the bottom but have tended to lose narrowly in most games.
